October 2, 1986 — Luray firemen cooled a smoldering fire on Blue Bell’s roof last Thursday afternoon. According to Clifton Campbell, captain of the Luray Fire Department, the blaze broke out around 1:35 p.m.

Sparks from welding on the roof were blown into a lint holding tank, igniting the blaze. Campbell said the fire was confined to “a limited area” and was brought under control in 15 minutes.

Blue Bell spokesman Randy Stokes said no fire or smoke entered the workplace and the brief blaze did not hinder the company’s operations.

Luray sent two fire engines and an emergency unit to Blue Bell and remained on the scene 45 minutes.
