August 27, 1987 — Luray was clinging tenaciously to a four-point lead in its girls varsity basketball opener at Page County High School Tuesday evening.

With 1:29 to go in the third quarter, the Bulldogs owned a 21-17 advantage when senior Gina Campbell picked up her fourth foul. Coach Jim Logan was forced to pull her out for a breather.

With one minute left, senior guard Donna McGrady picked up her fourth violation and was also taken out of the game.

Panther forward junior Darlene Mitchell sank her two free throws and Luray’s lead dropped to two for the second time in the quarter. That was the closest the Panthers came to victory.

The Bulldogs went on a game-long scoring binge, outgunning Page by 14 points in a 37- 21 victory.
