October 19, 1989 — The pastors of area churches say that while they were happy to have free utility service, they understand why the town must now charge every customer — even itself.
“It doesn’t bother me, we use it and we ought to pay for it,” said the Rev. William A. Ricketts of the Luray United Methodist Church. “Other people have to pay, too.”
The town received word from the Farmers Home Administration last month that free water service must stop within 30 days and a plan developed to install meters on all water lines.
Town Manager Ronald Good said at last week’s town council meeting that the fire department, rescue squad and churches were receiving free service. In addition, the town does not bill its own facilities.
“We have to do it,” said Assistant Town Manager Lonnie Arrington. “This is an FmHA requirement. Everything in the Town of Luray is going to have to have a water meter. We will even have to write ourselves a check.”
