September 2, 1965The Luray Colonials climaxed a great season for 1965 in the Shenandoah Valley Baseball League by defeating the New Market Rebels, 4-1, Sunday night at New Market in the seventh and deciding game of the best 4-of-7 championship series.

Manager Red Norwood, of Luray, gave the pitching assignment in the seventh and crucial games to Ross Mersinger, and the big right-hander from Baltimore, Md., came through by allowing only six hits and fanning nine for his second outstanding pitching performance in the playoffs.

Mersinger hurled a one-hitter against Craigsville in the semi-finals and won his own game, 1-0, with a home run.

Mersinger took the mound against the Rebels in the final game still feeling the effects of the flu, which kept him ill in bed.

The seventh game was played before 990 fans.
