LURAY — The Town’s July 4th celebration keeps getting bigger and better every year, and 2023 will be no exception. With live music being performed on four different stages, a wide variety of food vendors, lawn games, a cruise-in, duck race and the largest fireworks display in the region, Luray is expecting thousands of visitors to descend on the Hawksbill Greenway between 5 and 9 p.m. on Tuesday, July 4 for the annual “Downtown Get Down.”

The Ruffner Plaza stage just below the West Main Street Bridge will showcase the nostalgia-driven rock of Raised on Analog at 5 p.m. on Tuesday; followed by Low Low Chariot at 7 p.m. in the pocket park along the Hawksbill Creek.

The Mechanic Street stage adjacent to the Hawksbill Greenway will feature Chad Laughlin & Blue Ridge Rain at 5 p.m.; followed by Who Shot John at 7 p.m.

Performing Arts of Luray (PAL) will also host live music, with Dwight Martin being the featured act of PAL’s “Party on the Plaza” from 6 to 9 p.m. outside the Rebecca J. Graves Regional Center for the Performing Arts.

Just across the road and a few doors up East Main Street, a 4th of July bluegrass concert will be held at Main Street Flavors from 8:30 to 10:30 p.m. Luray’s John W. Lee will open up, followed by Duncan & Mabe of Winchester. A $10 donation is suggested, but no one will be turned away. A portion of the proceeds will be donated to Every Child Early Learning Center in Luray. The bluegrass concert is being sponsored and hosted by Admiralty Consulting, LLC. and Main Street Flavors.

The Hawksbill Greenway — a paved path following the Hawksbill Creek through Downtown Luray — will be filled with activities from Ruffner Plaza to the Mechanic Street lot. A wide variety of food trucks will tempt the taste buds, while kids can enjoy the inflatables and lawn games.

And watch out for the lady on the stilts, as well as other crafts, vendors and information tents.

The Luray Downtown Initiative (LDI) is also hosting the “Star-Spangled Crusie-In” featuring classic American muscle cars lined up along the Main Street Bridge.

The Duck Races down the Hawksbill Creek will be held at 6:30 p.m. and 8 p.m., with prizes being given away after both races. Proceeds help benefit the Page Alliance for Community Action (PACA), which is partnering with the Town of Luray and LDI to put on the July 4th event.

The annual fireworks display, which draws in thousands from the surrounding area, will be launched once again from the Page Valley fairgrounds at 15 Fairlane Drive, Luray. Those who want to watch the fireworks from the fairgrounds should use Gate 1 by the DMV (off Collins Avenue). Fireworks will begin at about 9:25 p.m. and should be visible from most locations around the Town of Luray.

There is truly something for everyone… from music lovers to car lovers, from a woman on stilts to ducks on the water, from pickin’ and grinnin’ to boot scoot boogin’, and from fireworks junkies to foodies…the entire family will have a “blast” at what’s quickly becoming one of Luray’s showcase events.
