Dual storms

January 29, 1987 — Winter slugged the Page Valley — and other areas of Virginia — with a double whammy during the past week.

The first storm hit last Thursday with up to a foot of snow covering the valley and surrounding mountains. Another wintry blast followed on Sunday and Monday, adding another 8-10 inches of snow atop the existing drifts. The one-two punch was accompanied by plummeting temperatures which dipped below the zero mark early this week.

Shenandoah National Park’s official weather station at Park headquarters east of Luray recorded 11 inches of snow last Thursday and another 9-1/2 inches Sunday and Monday.

Total snow on the ground Tuesday was 18 inches.
