SHENANDOAH, May 25 — Page County High School’s Bailee Gaskins left no doubt about who was the best softball player in the Bull Run District this season. Minutes before being named as the district’s “Player of the Year” on Thursday — which had already been decided beforehand — Gaskins hit a three-run home run to win the Bull Run Tournament championship, 5-4, in walk-off fashion for the Panthers.
“This was one of my goals coming into this season,” an emotional Gaskins said shortly after receiving the district’s Player of the Year honor. “Part of this award goes to my team…they are the reason I got this.”
In the district title game, Gaskins held Clarke scoreless through six innings, allowing only five hits that were spread out. Her game-winning home run was her only hit of the day. Following the district title game, Gaskins was also named first team All-District pitcher in the Bull Run.
The junior right-hander continued to help her team on the mound and at the plate in the Region 2B quarterfinals on Monday. Gaskins hurled a one-hit shutout against Madison with eight strikeouts, while also going 2-for-3 at the plate with two doubles and two RBI in the 12-0 slaughter-rule victory.
Page County (21-3) will host either Buckingham or East Rockingham in a Region 2B semifinal on Wednesday.
