LURAY, June 4 — James Madison University senior Kate Gordon hit her second home run in two days of the Women’s College World Series (WCWS) on Friday, as the Dukes remain undefeated with a 2-1 win over #5 Oklahoma State. With the win, JMU becomes the first unseeded team to ever enter the WCWS and start off 2-0.
The Dukes will face either #2 UCLA or #3 Alabama at 1 p.m. Sunday on ESPN — one more win secures a spot in the Series Finals in Oklahoma City (a three-game series scheduled for June 7-9).
Gordon, a former All-State standout at Page County High School, went on an 0-for-14 slump before hitting a go-ahead, solo home run in extra innings against #1 Oklahoma on Thursday. The red-shirt senior then took one to the warning track in her first at-bat on Friday, before hitting her second solo shot in three at-bats to give the Dukes a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the third. Gordon also took her final at-bat deep to left-center, but an outstanding play kept the senior at 1-for-3 on the day.
Both home runs proved to be the Dukes final runs in each game.
Prior to starting the bottom of the fourth, an ESPN analyst asked JMU coach Loren LaPorte: “I think the whole world wants to know…I want to know…what did you feed Kate Gordon before you came on this trip?”
Despite the two home runs in the WCWS, Gordon still sits at 4-for-28 (.143) in the post-season. Yet, she holds the all-time home run record for both JMU and the Colonial Athletic Association.
“It’s a mentality thing for her right now,” Coach LaPorte told the ESPN sideline analyst. “She’s not only playing for her family, but for this team and for everybody back in Harrisonburg, Va.…and Page County, where she is from…She’s just playing, and that’s what we kind of told her to do…just play Kate, just play.”
Senior Odicci Alexander, of Park View High School in South Hill, made a diving tag to stymie a suicide squeeze attempt by the Cowgirls in the top of the seventh. Alexander gave up only one earned run in the fifth.
Gordon’s home run on Friday marked her 20th of the season, and her 70th in her collegiate career. Despite her low average, Gordon has still accounted for 5 RBI in the postseason.
This season, the Dukes (41-2) have only lost to Elon and the second of a three-game series with Missouri in the Super Regional. Unseeded JMU had to beat #8 and #9 to get to the Series, and now they have defeated #1 and #5.
The Cinderella story continues for the Dukes in their first appearance in the WCWS on Sunday when they face either #2 or #3 at 1 p.m. in Oklahoma City on ESPN.
