Kite, Patterson, Plum, Jenkins make strong showings four meets into season

WILSON MEMORIAL, Sept. 13 — Much like they did in the 2025 season opener a month ago, Page County’s Aaron Hensley and Luray’s Isabela Rizek are leading the way this fall on cross country courses through the Northern Shenandoah Valley.

After winning the seventh annual Chrisman Classic on Aug. 16, Rizek placed fifth at the 12th annual Central High School Cross Country Invitational on Aug. 30 at Fairview Park in Woodstock. The Luray junior finished with a time of 21:14.8 — just over a minute behind winner Ashley Moran of Clarke County. Luray finished second as a team behind Clarke, with strong performances from Brianna Plum (9th – 21:38), Mya Jenkins (16th – 22:08.5), and Carolina Wood (21st – 23:34.2) among 67 competitors in the race.

Hensley finished in fourth place of the boys division of the three-mile run in Woodstock on Aug. 30. The Page County senior recorded a time of 16:41.1 — just over a minute behind winner Evan Roberts of Madison County. Page County’s boys cross country team finished in third place at the Central Invitational. Clarke claimed the top spot as a team. The Panthers got an impressive outing from Asher Kite (6th – 16:59.9), while Luray freshman Ryan Patterson finished 18th among the 60 runners with a time of 18:12.9.

On Sept. 3, Luray hosted a 5K run among three schools, including a powerful Stonewall Jackson team and East Rockingham. The Generals won the boys division as a team and took the first three positions, with Marcus Bowley winning the race in 17:43.79. Patterson was the top finisher for the Bulldogs (4th – 19:12.78), followed by Max Banks (7th – 20:56.25) and Levi Strickler (21:18.18). The Luray girls won their division as a team, taking five of the top 10 spots — Rizek (3rd – 23:00.7), Plum (4th – 23:51.98), Wood (5th – 24:59.13), Jenkins (6th – 25:27.3) and Chloe Catron (9th – 27:28.64).

Hensley and Rizek again lead the way for local cross country runners at the Augusta Invitational on Saturday, Sept. 13 at Wlison Memorial High School. Hensley finished in fifth place in the boys division with a time of 17:28.20, while Kite came in 10th (18:05.10). There were 127 runners in the boys’ race, many from largers schools. Rizek finished 18th in the girls division among 84 runners, with a time of 23:04, while Jenkins came in 28th (24:07).
