~ Press release provided by Stanley Volunteer Fire Department
STANLEY, Jan. 12 — Fire Chief Terry A. Pettit reported that the Stanley Fire Department was called for a house fire Friday night at 9:24 p.m. at 711 Frank Ballard Road about three miles North of Stanley. Pettit stated that firefighters arrived within six minutes of the call, but most of the back of the single-story house was on fire and spreading.
The occupant Kenneth Short was home at the time of the fire, and he stated that he was cooking when a pot on the kitchen stove caught fire. Short attempted to extinguish the fire for a few minutes, but the blaze quickly spread and he was forced to escape the blaze.
The home is considered a total loss. Chief Pettit estimated the damage to be around $75,000.
A female friend also lived at the residence, but was not home at the time of the fire. The home is owned by Jimmy Price of Ashland, Va. Both Short and Price have insurance, and the Red Cross is assisting with temporary living arrangements. Short’s dog perished in the fire.
Six units and 23 firefighters responded to the blaze, and it took an hour to bring the fire under control. Firefighters remained on the scene for three hours to make sure the fire was out.
The department was assisted by a tanker from the Luray Fire Department, and the Shenandoah Fire Department covered the Stanley station for other calls with an engine. Both the Stanley Rescue Squad and Page County EMS responded to the call, but no injuries were reported. The Page County Sheriff’s Office also assisted with blocking off Frank Ballard Road to traffic for several hours.
