STANLEY, DEC. 15 — Fire Chief Terry A. Pettit reported that the Stanley Volunteer Fire Department responded to a structure fire at 240 Deford Avenue at about 3:12 a.m. on Friday. Chief Pettit stated that firefighters were on the scene within five minutes and fire was already showing from the front portion of the house. The structure suffered severe interior damage estimated at $100,000.

The house is owned by Shirley Stoneberger and Brenda Turner. The latter lived at the residence with Lester Cubbage and both were at a local hospital for a medical procedure at the time of the fire, according to Chief Pettit. The house was insured.

Chief Pettit stated that the house was located on a dead end street, which delayed reporting the fire due to neighbors being asleep or away. Chief Pettit also remarked that the houses are located close to one another on that street, and firefighters did a great job of protecting nearby homes.

The fire started in the front portion of the house and is being investigated by the Stanley Police Dept. and the Page County Sheriff’s Office.

Pettit said six units and 22 firefighters from the Stanley Fire Department responded to the call, and it took about an hour to bring the fire under control. Firefighters remained on the scene for three hours to make sure the fire was out.

The Luray Volunteer Fire Department was called to assist with covering calls at the Stanley station and answered a smoke alarm activation call while there. The Page County EMS also responded with one unit and crew. No injuries were reported.

The Page County Sheriff’s Office assisted with traffic control and East Main Street (Route 340 Bus.) was blocked for about two hours by hose lines connected to fire hydrants.
