WOODBERRY FOREST, Feb. 10 — Our apologies for a belated honor going out this week to Luray High School junior Davey Johnson. Last year, Johnson earned the only state title in the county in athletics. Now, after finishing as a region runner-up in cross country this fall, the junior runner was a part of TWO Region 2B titles earlier this month.
Johnson took first place in the boys 1000 meters at the Region 2B Indoor Track and Field Championships held at Woodberry Forest School on Saturday, Feb. 10. The long distance runner was also part of a second region championship, as the LHS boys 4×400 relay team took first place as well. The relay team includes fellow region champions Hunter Kibler, Drayvin Stevens and Eli Jones. These are the only two region titles claimed by local athletes so far this year. Johnson added a region-runner up title in the boys 1600 meters with a second place finish.
Other Bulldogs medaling at the Region B indoor meet and qualifying for state are:
- 2nd place – region runner-up – Drayvin Stevens, boys 300 meters
- 2nd place – region runner-up – Annah Whitmer, boys 500 meters
- 3rd place – Maya Jenkins, girls 3200 meters
- 3rd place – Hunter Kibler, James Farrow, Alan Benitez and Drayvin Stevens, boys 4×200 meter relay
Several Bulldogs ran their best times of the seasons, which helped Luray’s boys team finish fourth and the Luray girls finish eighth in team scoring out of 12 schools.
Regional medalists now advance to the VHSL Class 2 State Indoor Track and Field Championships next Wednesday and Thursday, Feb. 28-29 at Liberty University in Lynchburg.
