Kauffman-Coffman family reunion celebrates 300 years of heritage

A reunion tradition – a group photo on the front steps of the Kauffman Family homestead.

Dear Editor:

On Saturday, July 26, the Kauffman-Coffman family reunion drew about 60 relatives from across the country for a day steeped in shared history and connection.

The gathering opened in the afternoon at Kauffman’s Mill, where attendees explored the historic grounds, including the mill ruins and the on-site Kauffman-Mauck Cemetery — resting place of generations dating back to 1804. Guests enjoyed touring the Kauffman Family Homestead that was established in 1772, together with the standing, Georgian-style brick house that was built in 1820.

Family members brought and displayed many relics, photographs, and other heirlooms to spotlight the rich family history. As cousins caught up, everyone savored light refreshments beneath the shade of century-old trees and the wrap-around covered porch.

The reunion continued in the evening at the Luray Fire Station banquet hall with a sit-down, catered dinner. The highlight of the evening was an illustrated presentation by Don Vogt, who traced the family’s roots back over three centuries. Attendees listened as Vogt recounted stories of the Kauffmans’ immigration, local impact, and legacy, sparking lively reminiscences among the group.

The day fostered new connections among distant family members and helped younger generations appreciate their rich heritage. Organizers Greg Kauffman, Don Vogt, and Mike Brubaker were grateful for the good turnout and are already looking forward to future reunions.

If you are a Kauffman-Coffman family descendent and would like to connect with the extended family and hear about future events, please email gwkauffman@gmail.com.
