STERLING, March 23 — Eleven members of the Luray High School forensics team qualified for and competed in the VHSL Class 2 state forensics tournament at Dominion High School in Sterling on Saturday. Trevor Haugen posted the best finish and became a all-state medalist in forensics after placing 3rd in Impromptu Speaking.
Last month, the Bulldogs won the sweepstakes at both the Region 2B tournament on Feb. 21, and then four days later at the Super Regional. The Region 2B title was Luray’s sixth-straight championship in forensics, among a dozen schools that competed.
At both the region tournament and the super regional, Luray’s Sophia Williams was named the “Performer of the Year”. LHS forensics coaches Gwen Burley and Anthony Hammer were also named Coaches of the Year at both tournaments as well.
At the state tournament on Saturday, the top three finishers were considered All-State medalists. Below are the finishes in their respective categories for the 11 LHS students who qualified for state (top three at Super Region):
- Trevor Haugen — 3rd place, Impromptu Speaking
- Sophie Williams — 4th place, Storytelling
- Briana Plum — 4th place, Extemporaneous Speaking
- Ronan Painter — 4th place, Humorous Interpretation
- Brigid Dudley — 4th place, Poetry
- Madilyn Cubbage — 5th place, Poetry
- Isabella Drain — 5th place, Prose
- Evie King & Virginia Grieb — 5th place, Humorous Duos
- Lilly Jenkins — 5th place, Original Oratory
- Mia Meyer — 6th place, Serious Interpretation
