Little precipitation, higher temperatures and ‘mud rain’ recorded in March

Mean temperature for March nearly 7 degrees above average

STANLEY — The most unusual weather event of the month goes to the “mud rain” observed on March 7. This was from the fires in Texas and the southern plains. Dirt and mud were kicked up with the wind overnight and carried this direction across several states, eventually falling here in the Page Valley.

Total rain for the month was 1.15 inches, or 1.81 inches below the March average of 2.96 inches. There were only three days with measurable rain during the month including 0.60 inch on the fifth, 0.08 inch on the 16th and 0.47 inch on the 31st. The year-to-date rain total is now at 7.38 inches, or 0.79 inches below the average year-to-date total of 8.17 inches.

The wettest March on record was in 1994, with 9.53 inches of rain and snow melt. The driest March occurred in 2006, with only 0.35 inches of rain recorded.

There was no measurable snow during the month. Average total snow for March is 4.1 inches. During the past 57 winters, the snowiest March was in 2013, with 23 inches of snow. Other snowy Marches include 20.5 inches in 1999 and 20.6 inches in 1994.

Valley temperatures for March were well above average. The mean temperature for the month was 51.7 degrees. The 57-year average mean temperature for March is 45.3 degrees.

The average afternoon high temperature for the month was 63.3 degrees, or 7.4 degrees above the average high of 55.9 degrees. High temperatures for March climbed into the 80s on one day, the 70s on eight days, the 60s on 11 days, the 50s on nine days, the 40s on one day and in the 30s on one day during the month. The high for the month was 80 degrees on March 29.

The warmest March on record was in 2012, where the average afternoon high was 66.4 degrees. The coldest March was in 2013, where the average afternoon high was only 46.2 degrees.

The average daily low temperature for the month was 40.1 degrees, or 5.5 degrees below the average low of 34.5 degrees. Low temperatures for the month were down into the 20s on four days, the 30s on 14 days, the 40s on seven days, the 50s on four days, and in the 60s on two days during the month. The low for the month was 20 degrees on March 2.

The peak wind gust for the month was 46 mph on March 16 .

No records were broken during March 2025.
