~ Press release provided by Stanley Volunteer Fire Department
STANLEY, Jan. 15 — Fire Chief Terry A. Pettit reported that the Stanley Volunteer Fire Department responded to a 12:30 a.m. house fire Monday morning at 3399 Lucas Hollow Road about 6 miles southeast of Stanley. When firefighters arrived most of the single-story house was on fire, and Chief Pettit stated that the home will be a total loss.
The home’s owner and only occupant, Jeff Foster, was able to escape the blaze and was not injured. The house was not insured, and the American Red Cross is assisting Foster with temporary living arrangements.
Chief Pettit stated that the fire started around a kerosene heater in the bedroom and quickly spread throughout the house. Estimated damage is around $50,000. It took nearly an hour to bring the fire under control, and firefighters remained on the scene for three hours to make sure the fire was extinguished.
Pettit also noted that firefighters had a hard time extinguishing the blaze because the house had two roofs on it, and in order to reach pockets of fire, firefighters had to cut through both. The cold weather and the fact that it snowed for two of the three hours that firefighters were on the scene also was a factor, according to the chief, but Pettit praised the volunteers for not allowing that to hinder them from doing their job.
Six Stanley units and 20 firefighters responded to the call and were assisted by tankers from the Luray and Shenandoah Fire Departments. The Luray Fire Department also stood by the Stanley station to cover other calls. A unit from Page County EMS also stood by, but no injuries were reported.
