With the score 2-1 and one out in the bottom of the sixth, King William’s Annabelle Townsend laid down a beautiful bunt to advance runners to second and third and fill the bases. However, despite there being no throw to first base, a runner rounded third and headed for home with catcher Emma Lucas holding the ball in her mitt. The tough senior took a big blow at the plate (potentially injuring her shoulder) as the runner made no effort to slide, but Lucas held on to the ball and made a crucial second out.
And although the game stopped and it took a few moments for her to recover… the senior did not leave the game. Three days after walking across the stage at graduation, Lucas still stood tall for the Panthers. At a time when many of her generation are called “soft”, Lucas showed a grit that the younger Panthers will benefit from by example.
The senior was chosen as a first team selection at catcher for the Bull Run District. The district tournament was canceled due to weather and scheduling issues. PVN has not received the All-Region or All-State selections at this time, but Lucas is likely to make an appearance.
Lucas has had a great career with Panther softball and earned several post-season accolades (All-Region last season). She will be greatly missed in the lineup and behind the plate next spring.
