Bulldogs have four games remaining in Bull Run

LURAY, Oct. 10 — The Luray Bulldogs held a moving ceremony to honor Breast Cancer Awareness Month prior to Thursday night’s Bull Run District match with Madison. The players donned pink uniforms for the occasion and handed out pink roses to cancer survivors and those battling the disease. However, on the court, the Bulldogs couldn’t slow down the third-place Mountaineers, as Madison swept Luray on the road in three sets.

Senior Michelle Thompson posted the best overall performance for Madison with four kills and four aces. Senior Lorelei Dean recorded six kills and an ace against Luray, while sophomore Jenna Tanner had five kills and an ace. The Mountaineers also got strong play from sophomore Anna Thompson (three kills, one ace), junior Alivia Lewis (two kills, one ace), and senior Ryleigh Gordon (two aces).

Luray was lead by senior Kate Taglauer and freshman Caroline Donovan, who both chalked up five kills and one ace. Junior Reese Fitton had three kills and an ace, while freshman Sierra Forder posted two kills and an ace.

The Bulldogs fell behind quick in the first set and never recovered. At 15-10, the Mountaineers went on a 10-0 run to close out the opening set with a 25-10 win. Dean scored three of the last four points for Madison, while Taglauer recorded three kills in the first frame for Luray.

The second set was competitive up to a 13-13 tie. At that point, Madison went on a 12-1 run en route to a 25-14 win. Thompson scored six of the Mountaineers final 15 points, with two kills and four aces. Fitton provided two kills and a big block for the Bulldogs.

The third and final set was the most competitive of the night. Although Madison held an early 10-5 lead, Luray kept things close and tied the game up at 17, 18, 19 and 20. The Mountaineers would then end on another run, this time 5-0, for the 25-20 win and the match (3-0).

Up next, Luray (5-5, 7-8) will host second-place Central (7-1, 9-2) at 7:15 p.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 15. Central’s only district loss came to first-place Clarke, who’s only loss in the Bull Run was to Madison on Sept. 24. The last time the Bulldogs matched up with the Falcons, Luray fell 3-1 on the road Sept. 19.

Madison (7-2, 13-2) will travel to Page County (1-7, 1-13) on Monday, Oct. 14 for a 7:15 p.m. district match rescheduled from Oct. 1. On Tuesday, the Mountaineers will host the Generals of Stonewall Jackson.
