Age 97, Shenandoah, Va.
Margaret Ann Harvey Furlow passed peacefully at her home on December 14, 2024. She was born to Harry Harvey and Marion Hart Harvey Ludwig McDonald in Conshohocken, Pennsylvania, on July 15, 1927.
After graduating at age 17 from The Charles Ellis School for Girls in Newtown Square, Pennsylvania, she worked as a clerk for the Board of City Trusts in Philadelphia. She married William Adam Furlow, Jr., in 1945, who preceded her in death. In addition, Margaret was an emergency room patient registration clerk at Inova Fairfax Hospital in Fairfax, Virginia, and a dispatcher for the Rockingham County Virginia Sheriff’s Department. She served as a reader for The Valley Voice, a service for the blind of James Madison University’s WMRA. She thrived in challenging environments, and she set similar high expectations for her children.
Margaret’s passions in life were her dogs and cats, gardening, baking, crafting, needlework of all kinds, including quilting, embroidery, needlepoint, and knitting, and religious philosophy. She considered her home a sanctuary against the buffets of the outside world. She was a member of “The Greatest Generation,” taking an uncompromising position in matters of relationships and society, and passed her insatiable curiosity for knowledge to her children, as well as a love of literature, art, and music.
Margaret is survived by a son, William A. Furlow III (Donna), of Falls Church, Virginia; a son, Corbett John Furlow, of Shenandoah; and a daughter, Claudia Lora Furlow, of Shenandoah. In addition, she is survived by grandchildren Amy Howell (Daniel), of Falls Church; Michael Puglisi, Jr. (Susan), of Richmond, Virginia; William Puglisi (Jenny), of Long Beach, California; and Margaret Canilang (Ben), of Alexandria, Virginia. She is also survived by great-grandchildren, Ryan and Emily Howell; Eva, Bino, and Franzi Puglisi; Madeline and Julia Puglisi; and Bennett and Lena Canilang.
She was preceded in death by her daughter, Cynthia Louise Furlow Thomas of Shenandoah, and her brother, John Henry Harvey, Sr. of Whiting, New Jersey. Fulfilling Margaret’s wishes, the body will be cremated with a private memorial at a later date.
