Margaret Lucille Cardin Sampson

Age 98, Elkton, Va.

Margaret Lucille Cardin Sampson went to join her Lord early on Sunday, February 22, 2026.

Lucille was born July 13, 1927 in Page County. She was the fifth of eleven children born to Minnie Edna Collier Cardin and John Isaac Cardin, Sr.

She was a 1946 graduate of Shenandoah High School. After graduation she moved to Washington, D.C. where she worked for the telephone company in the directory department. Upon her return to the valley, she worked at Merck and Co. as a lab technician. 

On August 14, 1949, she married Melvin Thomas Sampson who preceded her in death on May 18, 2000.

The couple had one daughter, Kimberly Diane Sampson, who survives. 

Siblings who preceded her in death include sisters, Mary Shirley, Eunice Zazicki, Evelyn Comer, Lorine Smith, Ima Jean Gordon and Madeline Cardin; and brothers, Clinton Cardin, John Isaac Cardin, Jr. and Roy Cardin. She was also preceded in death by one niece, Patricia Gordon Eppard.

Lucille is survived by one sister, Faye Hansbrough and many much-loved nieces and nephews. 

In her early life, Lucille was a member of Oak Grove Church in Shenandoah and was a 75-plus-year member of what is now Elk Run Evangelical in Elkton.

Burial will be private. There will be a Celebration of her Life and the arrival of Spring (her favorite season) at 11 a.m. on March 21, 2026 at Elk Run Evangelical Church, 513 East Spotswood Avenue in Elkton. 

Memorial contributions can be made to Elkton Community Library, 106 North Terrace Avenue in Elkton for the purchase of large print adult fiction or to The Rec c/o Pastor Audre King, P.O. Box 603, Luray, Va 22835.

Arrangements are being handled by the Kyger Funeral Home in Elkton, Va.
