STRASBURG, Feb. 5 — Much of the success that the Page County girls basketball team has enjoyed this season has come at the hands of senior guard Faith Mason. Not only does she lead the Panthers in scoring, but she also scoops up steals, provides solid defense, and is a true leader on the court. All of that was on display Monday night in Strasburg at the home of the previously unbeaten Rams.
A sluggish first quarter for Page ended with a three-pointer at the buzzer from Mason. A much-improved second quarter was sparked by seven points from Mason, including another three-pointer at the buzzer. The senior guard would finish with a game-high 21 points, but none more important than her 6-for-6 stretch at the foul line in the final 36 seconds.
Page County finished the upset of Strasburg, 55-51, handing the Rams (12-1, 18-3) their first loss in the Bull Run District this season. The fact that it was on the road made it that much sweeter, as the Panthers finally took down a team that beat them on their home court earlier this season and denied them a trip to last season’s state tournament… And on the night that reigning Region 2B Player of the Year Macy Smith was recognized by Ram Nation as the school’s all-time leading scorer.
The win on Monday moves the Panthers to 14-8 overall and 10-3 in the district with a lock on the No. 2 seed in next week’s Bull Run Tournament. Quarterfinals begin Monday, Feb. 12. Page County is likely to host Madison (2-11, 4-17).
On Friday night, the Panthers close out the regular season with a road trip to rival Luray (4-9, 6-15), where they tip-off with the Bulldogs at 6 p.m.
