December 20, 1962 — The C. Heath and sister millinery store, owned and operated by Mrs. J.R. Painter, affectionately known as “Miss Nell” is closing her Millinery and Ladies Apparel Shop on Dec. 31, after having successfully operated the business for 43 years. She has been ably assisted by Mrs. Harry Jenkins for a great part of the time.
The store is a landmark in the community, having been built by G.W. Warthens about 1891. He operated a Confectionary Shop in one part and Mrs. Warthens operated the Millinery Shop on the opposite side. The store has been an important one in the history of Shenandoah, a gathering place for the ladies. During the early days, the hats were all made by hand and Miss Nell was an artist at the business.
