STANLEY — The summer season at the Hawksbill Pool got off to slow start on a cool Memorial Day weekend.
“It wasn’t good,” Town Manager Terry Pettit told members of the Stanley Council at their June 9 meeting. “It was cool and we had some rain.”
However, attendance improved as the summer heated up, with 1,061 swimmers enjoying Page County’s only public swimming pool from May 29 through June 8. Then came the Town’s first Movie Night and Swim at the pool on June 12. Marvel Studio’s 2011 superhero blockbuster “Captain America: The First Avenger” drew 198 swimmers and an overall crowd of “300 to 350,” according to town officials.
The second in a series of Movie Nights hosted by the Town was sponsored by Knight and Lucas Construction.
The Town opened the Hawksbill Pool this summer with a new feature. The wading pool at the shallow end is now a splash pad complete with two sprinklers. The $59,500 project was paid for in part by a $14,000 grant from the Page Alliance for Community Action.
One pool-related issue the town council discussed on June 9 was inappropriate swimwear being donned at the public pool by “younger teens.” Lifeguards and pool/park officials have approached several young swimmers already this season about their attire, noting a desire to maintain a “family atmosphere” at the pool. Those officials have been met with varying degrees of defiance from both teens and parents. So, council members authorized the posting of signage at the Hawksbill Pool noting that “appropriate swim attire” was required.
The Hawksbill Pool is open with lifeguards on duty from 11:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. daily through Labor Day.
Upcoming dates for a Movie Night and Swim beginning at 9:30 p.m. at the Hawksbill Pool are Thursday, July 8 and Friday, Aug. 20. On Sept. 25, Movie Night moves back to Ed Good Memorial Park. A Dec. 3 Movie Night will be held at the Hawksbill Park Hall.
