Mystery bullet

May 1, 1986 — A Route 3, Luray women escaped injury Monday evening when a bullet from a high-powered rifle passed through the roof of her house, bounced off the floor and grazed her head.

Around 6:30 p.m., according to Investigator L. Jay Jenkins, Deputy Ikey Good responded to the incident at the James and Bonnie Stoneberger residence near Leaksville Road.

The .30-caliber bullet reportedly bounced off a floor and grazed Mrs. Stoneberger above the ear, but did not break the skin.

A search of the area provided no clues as to where the shot had come from.

“It appeared to be a .30-caliber bullet, which means it could have a half-mile to two- mile range,” Jenkins said. “If was shot up in the air, it’s hard to say how far” the bullet traveled.
