April 17, 1986 — A fire in Shenandoah National Park burned across 100 acres of forest land last weekend, Park Ranger Glen Knight reported.
Firefighters battled the blaze on the west side of Neighbor Mountain off Va. [Route] 611 near Rileyville for nearly two days before bringing it under control Sunday evening, Knight said.
About 35 firefighters, including some from Washington, D.C., and the George Washington National Forest, were called in to help dig fire lines and shovel dirt on the flames.
