HISTORY-Lee highway builders

October 7, 1889 — The continued wet weather is keeping the farmers from seeding. There has been no seeding done in this community yet. The Lutherans held a communion meeting here yesterday. Our district school board met last Saturday for the purpose of assigning teachers their respective schools. Agreeable to the request of some of the patrons of the Alma school, the board employed Miss Mary A. Fore to teach for them. The apple crop is said to be an ordinary one, but we are almost constrained to think otherwise, when we see how they are hauled to this place, although this is a great market for them this year, as there are three distilleries in operation here.

We were sorry to hear of the death of our friend and relative, Mr. James Davis, of Grove Hill, this county, which occurred on the 26th. The deceased was a soldier of the late war in the Confederate Army. He belonged to the artillery and was severely wounded. He was about 48 years old.

Mr. Jacob Seekford has recently made some highly necessary repairs to the church at this place. Mr. Wm. H. Jenkins expects to move to Luray in a few weeks, where he has charge of a section of the Shenandoah Valley Railroad. We are sorry to lose as good a friend and neighbor as Mr. J., but hope he may find a pleasant home in your live town.

Mr. Peter Jenkins expects to move to Sands in a few days. He will be greatly missed by us, as he is an excellent shoemaker and the only one we have at this place.
