SHENANDOAH, Oct. 20 — Players wearing No. 2 on Friday night at Buddy Comer Stadium — Page County sophomore Dawson Richards and Madison County senior Jayden Jenkins — accounted for five touchdowns, two for the Panthers and three for the Mountaineers. Madison, however, would score seven more times, while the Panthers could only muster one additional score.
The Mountaineers scored on nine of 11 offensive possessions and even recovered a fumble in the end zone on defense to post a lopsided 69-20 Bull Run District win on the road. The Panthers scored on three of 12 possessions, but turned the ball over four times during the game including three fumbles.
Richards ended Page County’s most successful drive of the night with a 13-yard touchdown run early in the second quarter. The 10-play, 59-yard drive took about three minutes and was fueled by a 23-yard run by sophomore Isaac Foltz and some tough yards on the ground by freshman Wyatt Morris. Richards posted his second touchdown of the game on the final play.
The only other score by the Panthers came on a three-play drive in the third quarter. Senior quarterback Hunter Pettit used his legs to account for 58 of the drive’s 63 yards, including a 51-yard dash to the end zone.
Seven different Mountaineers put points on the board for the visitors during Friday night’s district matchup. Jenkins led the way with three scores, including runs of six and 49 yards on offense and a fumble recovery in the end zone for a touchdown on defense as well. Sophomore Aiden Foster put up two scores with long breakaway runs of 40 and 61 yards.
Madison posted over 500 yards of offense and did most of their damage on the ground with seven carries of 14 yards or more, but they also went 4-of-8 through the air for 83 yards.
With the win, the Mountaineers move to 5-3 on the season with only one loss in the district (30-7 at Central last week). However, Madison must face two of the Bull Run’s toughest teams to end the season by hosting Strasburg next Friday, Oct. 27 and traveling to Clarke for the season finale on Thursday, Nov. 2.
With the loss, the Panthers fall to 1-7 on the season and now travel to the No. 1 team in Class 2, Central of Woodstock, next Friday, Oct. 27. However, Page County will host the only game that matters — the county rivalry matchup with the Bulldogs of Luray — on Friday, Nov. 3.
