LURAY, Nov. 1 — This week “Page Valley Livin'” previews the upcoming Election Day next Tuesday, Nov. 7 to let you know how many ballots have already been cast (you may be surprised), what you’ll need to bring with you to the polls to vote, how you can volunteer to be a poll worker, and what happens to a ballot after it leaves your hand and gets sucked up by the voting machine.

In the third installment of our weekly series, we visit with Page County Voter Registrar Carol Gaunt and talk about her memories of the largest voter turnout in her 16 years, what kind of turnout she expects this year, and why taking part in the process and voting is so important.

We also look back at the Week in Review, in both news — where two initiatives were shut down by the board of supervisors and school board members get an earful about problems at Shenandoah Elementary — as well as sports, with teams playing in the postseason and individual players earning post-season accolades. We will tell you what to expect this weekend around the Page Valley, and play “The 5Ws” with our registrar.

(Page Valley Livin’ ~ Episode 3 was recorded on Tuesday, Oct. 31 and first aired Wednesday, Nov. 1).

Coming up on Page Valley Livin’…we’re working on shows that will talk with those behind a proposal to build a new visitor’s center for the county on Route 211; and we’re trying to schedule a sit down with a local teenage hunter who’s already known all across the country and beyond.

The aim and purpose of these videos are to provide more information about more things that make up the wonderful place we call the Page Valley of Virginia. Serious issues will be handled seriously, while lighter issues may offer more opportunity to have some fun. There is no theme or agenda other than promoting the Page Valley, and trying to better inform the people who both live here and those who love to visit.

  1. Terrific idea for informing the public. Re the visitors center, please ask those involved to 1) identify specific post-pandemic research they have conducted to support this idea. Everything I see indicates that people plan trips online and brick and mortar centers are archaic 2) what conversations they have had with business owners, specifically those that cater to tourists. My understanding is that the bulk of businesses are opposed 3) why is the tourism council membership skewed so heavily toward elite cabin and resort owners who are likely familiar with a small subset of area tourists? Is this group sufficiently knowledgeable about overall tourism trends?

    Thanks
