SHENANDOAH, Sept. 13 — Page County was unable to stop East Rock on Friday night, as the Eagles scored on all six possessions of the first half, while the Panthers turned the ball over five times during the game. East Rock senior quarterback Parker Siever accounted for four touchdowns — two on the ground and two through the air — en route to a 45-8 non-district win at Buddy Comer Stadium.
Page County sustained one long drive in the first half, going 47 yards on 13 plays. The Panthers put up 247 yards of offense on the night, including a 44-yard breakaway touchdown run by sophomore Braxton Pettit in the final minutes of the game. Senior running back Ace Campbell lead the Page offense with 85 yards on 14 carries (6 yards per carry). Campbell had a run of 32 yards late in the third quarter. Sophomore quarterback Jayden Taylor passed for 123 yards, going 8-15, with three interceptions.
East Rock scored quickly, as Siever broke the first play from scrimmage 39 yards to the end zone. Page was able to recover a fumble on its first play, but then suffered a “pick six” on its second play from scrimmage as Eagles’ sophomore Aiden Raines grabbed the first of his two interceptions on the night and sprinted 21 yards to the end zone.
The Panthers turned the ball over on each of their first three possessions, resulting in East Rock scores. Page put together a 13-play drive to carry them into the second quarter, but gave the ball up on downs at the Eagles’ 21-yard line. East Rock would then score two more touchdowns, on two possessions, in just three plays. The Page defense was able to hold the Eagles to a 33-yard field goal on their final possession of the first half. East Rock took a 45-0 advantage into the break.
The visitors substituted freely in the second half, and a running clock limited each team to only three possessions. The Panthers picked up four first downs and found the end zone in the second half. Page’s passing game improved, as they continued to execute a middle screen well and hit a few long balls to sophomore Daniel Gibson.
East Rock utilized a dozen different ball carriers during the game. Senior Trestan Jones only got one carry, but he went 46 yards for a touchdown in the second quarter. The Eagles put 330 yards of offense.
Next up, Page County (0-2) travels to King and Queen Central High School for a 7 p.m. kickoff on Friday, Sept. 20. Last week, the Panthers opened up the season with a home loss to Bath County, 55-0.
East Rock (2-1) travels to Buffalo Gap on Friday, after suffering a fourth-quarter loss to Central of Woodstock, 14-7, last week. The Eagles grabbed a last-minute win in Week 1 from the Bulldogs of Luray, 9-7.
