Six local cheerleaders earn All-District honors

QUICKSBURG, Oct. 21 — Six local cheerleaders earned postseason honors during the Bull Run District cheer competition Monday night at Stonewall Jackson High School. Page County finished district runner-up as a team, and placed four members on the All-District squad (two first team selections, two second team). Luray came in fourth among six teams competing and placed two cheerleaders among the All-District selections (one first team, one second team).

The Rams of Strasburg won the cheer competition and took the district title, while senior Averi Starkey of Strasburg was named the Bull Run District Cheerleader of the Year. The Rams earned six slots among the 20 honorees, which included 10 first team selections and 10 second team.

Page County seniors Mady Murphy and Emmy Courtney earned first team All-District honors, while fellow teammates and classmates Haley Knighton and Kaylea Comer were second team selections.

Luray junior Raegan Dean represented the Bulldogs on the All-District’s first team, while sophomore Gracie Stillwell earned second team cheerleading honors.

Four teams at the district cheer competition will now advance to the Region 2B tournament next week, including Strasburg (BRD-1st), Page County (2nd), Luray (4th) and Stonewall Jackson (5th). Third-placed Rappahannock advances to the Region 1B tournament next week. Central was the only school not to advance to a region tournament.

    The Region 2B cheer tournament will be held at 6:30 p.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 30 at Fort Defiance High School in Augusta County.
