Schools in Luray go temporarily into soft lockdown, reports unfounded

LURAY, May 28 — Around 1:40 p.m. on Thursday, the Luray Police Department calmed the fears of many in Luray who were stirred up by inaccurate reports on social media of a suspicious male that surfaced about an hour earlier. Schools in town went into a “soft lockdown” after the reports were first posted online, but police quickly ascertained that there was no real threat to the public.
“The Luray Police Department is aware of the social media posts regarding a suspicious male. Luray officers and [the] Page County Sheriff’s Office did respond to a call of a suspicious male in the Town of Luray. Officers identified the male and at the time of contact there was no evidence that any crime had been committed. We have no reason to believe at this time that the individual is a threat or has made any threats to the public. We are aware there are social media posts and apps that are not accurate or relaying misleading information,” reads today’s post by the LPD.
Police Chief C.S. “Bow” Cook told PVN that earlier reports that the individual was wearing a “bulletproof vest and armored helmet” was not accurate.
“He was not wearing body armor,” Chief Cook said. “He was questioned by officers, and we have no reason to believe he has committed any crime or is any threat to the community.”
The male in question was seen in several locations in the west end of Luray, including Luray Caverns.
The “soft” or low-level lockdown of local schools has been lifted (just after 2 p.m.), and Chief Cook assures the public that no crime has been committed and there is no apparent threat to the community.
