Richard Lambert “Dick” Embick, 85, of Alexandria, passed away on Saturday, Oct. 9, 2021, at Inova Fairfax in Falls Church.
He was born on Sept. 3, 1936, in Joliet, Ill., and was a son of the late Paul Embick and Grace Glotfelty Embick.
Dick was a veteran of the United States Navy, serving for four years — two years of active military duty traveling the world and two years at the Pentagon. He was employed for 32 years in government civilian work as an audio visual specialist for the Navy and for NASA during the creation of the space program.
Dick was a member of the Boys Scouts of America, Order of the Arrow. He was a founding member of the Chesapeake Chapter of the New England MG “T” Register and enjoyed tinkering on his classic MG cars, especially his 1948 MG TC.
He played guitar and participated and managed several bands, specializing in “Big Band” music. He enjoyed the annual tradition of eating Chesapeake blue crabs each year for his birthday.
Dick loved history, especially WWI and WWII, and had a keen interest in German and Russian languages. Often described as quirky, stubborn, unique, determined, creative, obstinate and one-of-a-kind, Dick was known for his silly stories and memories.
On Aug. 18, 1962, he married Judith Ann Miller Embick, whom he met when they both reported for orientation as civil servants for the Navy.
Surviving in addition to his wife, Judith, are three daughters, Vera Embick of Alexandria, Kara Embick and husband Kevin Talkington of Fredericksburg, and Jennifer Fimbres, also of Alexandria; and three grandsons, Joshua Talkington and wife Jennifer of Parkville, Md., Jacob Talkington of Fredericksburg, and Conrad Fimbres of Fairfax. He was preceded in death by a brother, Ronald Embick; and a sister, Janis Stafford.
A graveside service will be conducted at 11 a.m. on Friday, Oct. 15, at the Morning Star Lutheran Cemetery in Luray, with military honors by the VFW.
The family will receive friends from 6-8 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 14, at the Bradley Funeral Home.
