Safeway opens

August 4, 1964 — Mayor Fred C. Walker will officially open the new Safeway Store in Luray in a ribbon-cutting ceremony this morning at 8 o’clock. Officials of Safeway Stores Inc. will also be on hand. The new store boasts 11,000 square feet of floor space, wide aisles, five checkout counters, a package pick- up conveyor system and a parking lot for 85 cars. William Ralph Jenkins, a native of Sperryville, is manager of the new store. He has been with Safeway Stores for 26 years, having managed the store on the bypass at Warrenton before coming to Luray.
