School Board compromises with teachers

May 24, 1991 — With no comment, the Page County School Board Monday approved a compromise on extended teaching hours — 8 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., instead of 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. as originally proposed. The unanimous vote came at a special meeting in a crowded Luray High School cafeteria.

The board first proposed extending hours from the current 8:20 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. schedule in the 1991-92 contract year at a work session in March. The action drew loud protests from teachers, PTA members and parents at the board’s April 11 meeting.

At that meeting, board chairman Dick Fox of District 2 agreed to meet with a delegation of teachers and PTA representatives April 15, when a compromise on the hours was proposed.
