TREASURE COAST, FLA., July 30 — The Shenandoah 8U All-Stars won their opening softball game of the 2021 Babe Ruth World Series Friday morning in Treasure Coast, Fla.
Shenandoah fell behind 2-0 after JPRD Eastbank scored a run in both the first and third innings. Then Shenandoah put together a four-run fourth inning to take the lead, 4-2. Eastbank would score one more run in the sixth, but Shenandoah held on for the 4-3 win.
Avery Hilliard earned the Ron Tellefsen “Player of the Game” award.
Shenandoah is scheduled to play the Lutz Lightning at 1 p.m. Saturday, before completing “pool play” on Sunday at noon against Royal Palm Beach. The results of the three games in pool play will determine seedings once bracket play begins on Monday.
The Shenandoah 8U All-Stars are making history, as the first team in that age division of softball to represent the Shenandoah Recreation League at the World Series. While the local league has sent several teams to Florida in recent years, only one team — the 2016 12U softball all-stars — have come home as World Series champions.
Shenandoah reached this year’s World Series after outscoring their opponents 37-2 in the state tournament they hosted earlier in July.
