8U softball all stars finish one game away from championship

GLEN ALLEN, July 16 — The Shenandoah Recreation League nearly claimed a third state title this summer, when its 10U softball all stars finished as state runner-up in the 2024 Virginia Babe Ruth State Softball Tournament last Tuesday at RF&P Park in Glen Allen.

Shenandoah’s 10U all stars went undefeated through the first two games of the 10-team, double elimination Babe Ruth state tournament — defeating Peachtree on Day 1 and New Kent on July 14, after a two-day rain delay. Shenandoah’s first loss came on Monday, July 15 to the hard-hitting bats of Manassas.

Shenandoah then beat Peachtree a second time, before losing to Manassas a second time in the state title matchup. The five-day tournament featured rain delays and 100-plus-degree heat.

“Our 10U girls are your 2024 Virginia Babe Ruth State Softball Runner-Up,” stated a social media post by the Shenandoah Rec League. “They fought hard against a strong-hitting Manassas team. The most important part of this game was that they never gave up. They gave it everything they had and even dug down and found more to give.”

A number of girls on this summer’s 10U all star team were part of last year’s 8U all star squad that also posted a state runner-up performance.

“These girls have such a bright future in our league and even the years after they age out they will be such assets to their high school teams,” the post continued. “They practiced hard and even took time out of their own practices to help with the 8U girls. Hold your head up high girls, we are so proud of you, you represented well.”

GLEN ALLEN, July 16 — The Shenandoah Recreation League’s 8U all stars finished just one game away from competing in the 2024 Virginia Babe Ruth State Softball Championship last Tuesday at RF&P Park in Glen Allen. The state tournament featured eight teams in the double-elimination format.

The 8U all stars lost their opener top New Kent, 11-7, on July 11, before coming back to beat Glen Allen, 13-1, and Peachtree, 16-10 on July 15. After beating Peachtree, Shenandoah had to hit the field again 30 minutes later to face New Kent. In fact…last Monday, the Shenandoah 8U all stars won three consecutive games after beating New Kent, 6-4. That’s three, back-to-back-to-back games, in 100-plus-degree heat.

On Tuesday, they lost their final game to Manassas — just one game from a state title matchup with Manassas.

“Our 8U girls took their final loss this morning. This group came out swinging for the fences after their first game. They were determined to fight their way thru that lower bracket, and they did just that. They were one game away from playing in the State Championship,” reads a social media post by the Shenandoah Rec League.

“A lot of these girls were experiencing their first year of All-Stars, along with a couple coaches,” the post continues. “They all accepted the challenge and never looked back. We are proud of their determination, hard work, and being eager to learn the game of softball. This group of girl’s and coaches have made us so proud, and we can promise, this won’t be the last time you see this group!”
