August 28, 1986 — Perched atop the Blue Ridge Mountains on the Skyline Drive, Skyland Lodge, famous for its fine food and warm accommodations, soon will celebrate its 100th birthday. Activities will be held Sept. 1-7.
Fifty years ago, Shenandoah National Park was dedicated “to the recreation and the recreation for future generations.” Already established in the Park, however, was Skyland Resort, which 50 years prior to this dedication, was a prosperous and exciting place.
Skyland, as it became better known, housed many special parties, games and musical treats. Its founder was George Freeman Pollock. With a dry wit and special sense of humor, Pollock entertained his guests with live snake shows, costume balls, wild west parties, country dancing and other elaborate entertainment.
A special week has been set aside in his honor to once again bring “Pollock back to Skyland.” It has been said his spirit still walks through the current dining room, opening doors and moving chairs.
