December 14, 1989 — Talk about lightning striking twice. Just when Page County was about to climb out from under a half-foot of snow which fell Friday, another storm swooped into the Valley and dumped about four inches of the white stuff by 10 p.m. Tuesday.
The first storm topped out at seven inches at Big Meadows and six at Fort Stover, according to Greg Stiles, the assistant chief ranger at Shenandoah National Park and a “Weather Watcher” for WRC-TV Channel 4 in Washington.
The temperature remained around 20 throughout the storm, resulting in a drier, powdery snow, Stiles said. The Skyline Drive was closed Friday except for Thornton Gap to Big Meadows.
Weather forecasters gave advance warnings about the storm as early as Monday of last week, giving area residents plenty of time to stock up.
