‘Some people say I’m fattening Page County’

Luray panoramic

October 24, 1986 — When most of Page County is sound asleep, Mahlon Horst and his wife, Leah, are busy turning pounds of dough into dozens of doughnuts. Horst, a Stanley resident, is the Doughnut Man — the chef extraordinaire who sweetens the coffee breaks of local factory workers. Take your choice, there are glazed, coconut and cinnamon, hot out of the fryer, packaged to order for $2.50 a dozen and guaranteed to please.

“I worked with a number of recipes until I got the one I wanted,” Horst said. “Some people say I’m fattening Page County.”

  2. This is “Today In History.” The original date of this article was in 1986. I am sure there are places that sell doughnuts here. Dunkin’ Donuts, Strite’s sometimes sells them. I saw that Mr. J’s Bagels brought some products to The Coffee Shop in Stanley. You might ask them.
