February 26, 1987 — A wintry storm piled nearly a foot of snow on Page County Sunday, forcing schools to close, creating hazardous road conditions and disrupting business and meeting schedules Monday.
The heavy snow clung to tree branches and power lines, causing some outages of electricity lasting for several hours in some areas.
Streets and roads were quickly coated with snow and ice, but police reported no serious vehicle accidents.
Shenandoah National Park’s official weather station at Park headquarters east of Luray recorded 11 inches of snow.
The snow was the third big storm of the year.
Up to two feet fell in a dual storm Jan. 22, 25 and 26, the heaviest since a 26-inch accumulation Feb. 10-11, 1983.
Neither of those came close to matching the biggest snowstorm of the county’s history — a 42-inch blizzard March 3-5, 1962.
