December 6, 1962 — The third annual “Hap” Heiser Handicap Bowling Tournament held last week at the Luray Bowling Lanes, was won by Leo Strickler Jr. of Luray, who had a score of 723 to take first prize of $125. Strickler is the first local bowler to win this classic.
Finishing second in this year’s tournament was Ike McDonald of Martinsburg, W.Va., with a score of 716. His prize was $65.
This tournament was named after the sportswriter of the Page News and Courier in December of 1960 by Leo L. Strickler Sr., one of the greatest all-around athletes ever developed in Luray and it is interesting to note that his son has the honor of becoming the first local pinman to win it.
