April 16, 1987 — Luray area residents will not have to venture far from their back yards to reach the beach this summer.
If progress continues on schedule, Lake Arrowhead will open for swimming Memorial Day weekend, according to the town’s recreation director.
“If all goes well, we’re shooting for Memorial Day,” Pat O’Brien said Monday. “Once we get the dredging done, we can have the sand here in a week, two weeks.”
The facility located on Va. [Route] 669 will be extended to include 200 tons of white beach sand, a volleyball net, portable dressing stalls and concession stands and additional picnic tables.
O’Brien said Lake Arrowhead’s estimated $13,150 conversion, spurred by the town’s refusal to lease Woodland Park pool, afforded the community a more spacious leisure center.
O’Brien said despite swimming, fishing will still be available in the cove and on the west side of the lake.
