Dennis Quaid-hosted documentary series highlights county’s ag, tourism

LURAY, Jan. 25 — The county’s natural beauty, rich agriculture and thriving tourism industry, and their unique positions as economic drivers, are underscored in an educational series hosted by actor Dennis Quaid.

The series — “Viewpoint” — airs on public television stations and covers a variety of topics in short-form documentaries distributed across the nation. The Quaid-hosted segment was distributed to nearly 200 stations throughout the U.S. on Nov. 13, 2023.

An agreement between Page County officials and Pioneer Production Services expanded the project’s reach through the airing of a one-minute commercial.

Page County’s commercial debuted nationally on the Fox Business Network on Nov. 16 during primetime, before airing for a second time on Nov. 19. The commercial has since been visible on several of the nation’s top markets to an estimated viewership of more than 50 million homes. An agreement between the county and the production company states that the commercial would air nationally at least once in all 50 states before airing 400 times in regional markets among the top 100 U.S. cities, based on population.

“I appreciate the opportunity to showcase Page County’s two strongest economic drivers: tourism and agriculture,” said Page County Director of Economic Development and Tourism Nina Fox. “It was also wonderful to work with the administrator and board of supervisors, who take an active role in marketing our community. Chairman Weakley’s initial involvement with the producers and his excitement for this project helped secure funding from the board for approval.”

The Page County Board of Supervisors unanimously approved funding the $28,900 project during the board’s Jan. 17, 2023 session, following a phone call between Viewpoint producers with Page County Administrator Amity Moler and Supervisors’ Chairman Keith Weakley. The project was funded by the Page County Economic Development and Tourism Department.

Filmed last June at The Pavilion at Shenandoah Woods in Stanley, Page County’s segments include insights from Fox, Page County farmer Jared Burner of Burner’s Beef, and Jason Cave, owner of the popular wedding venue The Pavilion at Shenandoah Woods.

In addition to the Quaid-hosted segment and one-minute commercial, Page County contracted a longer-form, 5-minute segment to use in its own marketing efforts. The segment serves as “an in-depth look at the organization that we select,” according to a Jan. 10, 2023 email from Viewpoint producers to county officials, and features a “call to action” for viewers. It is set to be emailed to a target audience of more than one million potential viewers who have requested information about “Discover America; Great Places to Live, Raise a Family, Visit and Start a Business,” according to the Jan. 10 correspondence.

“This was an opportunity to promote agriculture, tourism and agri-tourism,” said Moler. “It showcases some of our strongest assets and what we are doing differently than other localities — how all of our beautiful natural resources help us have a sustainable way of life.”
