March 26, 1961 — Police are pressing hard this week to find guilty parties responsible for a series of break-ins on Main Street last Saturday night. Eight stores report break-ins or attempted break-ins which occurred sometime after midnight.
Harlin’s Cut-rate store reported that the cash drawer had been rifled of about $30 and Ayers Hardware reported numerous small items missing. The store did not miss any money. So far as is known the thieves were unsuccessful in entering any of the other stores although there were tool marks on doors where “jimmying” was attempted. There were also a number of fingerprints which police are following up.
It is presumed that the break- ins occurred sometime after midnight. Several of the store operators were in their places of business about midnight and saw no evidence of any attempt to break- in.
Entrance at Harlin’s was effected by bending the aluminum frame work with a tool of some kind and dislodging the bolt. Mr. Ayers found the door to his store open on Sunday morning. Locks were so badly damaged on some of the store doors that it was necessary to call for assistance to open them.
Most of the attempted break-ins were on the south side of Main from Broad to the N.&W. tracks.
