December 27, 1990 — The Commonwealth Transportation Board has approved a $2.9 million contract for a Page County firm to build a two-lane road to replace Va. 615 (Battle Creek Road) and become part of U.S. 340.
Virginia Department of Transportation Luray District Engineer Don Ripley said the fact that the work will be done by General Excavation of Luray makes the project that much better.
“That really makes it nice,” Ripley said. “They’ve done quite a few jobs for us in the past. We’re glad to get it under contract.”
According to a VDOT news release, the new two-lane road which will generally parallel Va. 615, will be called U.S. 340 while the current U.S. 340 north from Alma will become U.S. 340 Business.
The new U.S. 340 will intersect U.S. 211 at the foot of Massanutten.
