MCCA picks up two key district wins; Hunsberger hits career-high 30 points

LURAY, Jan. 9 — The Mt. Carmel Christian Academy (MCCA) varsity girls have found their stride on the basketball court. With a 9–5 record, the Warriors are riding a five-game win streak and showed this week that the Christmas break did nothing to slow their momentum.
On Friday, MCCA put forth a true team effort to defeat district-foe Fresta Valley Christian School, but the Warriors also benefitted greatly from the explosive performance of Darbi Hunsberger, who recorded a career-high 30 points.
Haelyn Morris, Rebekah Shifflett, and Chloe Kline all narrowly missed a double-double, underscoring the Warriors’ balanced attack.
On Thursday, the Warriors racked up an important district victory over Revival United Christian. The Crusaders had pushed the Warriors to the limit in their previous meeting on Dec. 4 — a 45–39 MCCA win that came down to the wire.
This time, the Warriors left no doubt. Sticking to their game plan of pushing the pace and attacking the basket, Mt. Carmel forced United Christian into early foul trouble. The aggressive approach paid off throughout the night.
Post player Chloe Kline delivered a breakout performance, scoring a career-high 22 points, while pulling down eight rebounds.
The sophomore duo of Haelyn Morris and Darbi Hunsberger stuffed the stat sheet:
- Haelyn Morris: 18 points, 6 assists, 5 steals
- Darbi Hunsberger: 12 points, 6 rebounds, 5 assists, 9 steals
Freshman Amelia Pierce also made her presence felt, contributing 5 points, 5 rebounds, and 5 assists.
The Warriors secured the district win in commanding fashion, 65–41.
MCCA will look to keep the momentum rolling next week with two road games, beginning with a matchup at Legacy Christian Academy on Tuesday, Jan. 13.
