June 6, 1890 — The Rev.W.Davenport, of the Cave Street colored Baptist church, this place, was heavily pounded by his congregation one evening last week, and notwithstanding his robust form he offered no resistance to the attack so unsuspected and vigorous. A barrel of flour, meat, groceries and everything calculated to make a preacher’s table heavy and his heart light were the weapons used by the pounders. He is a worthy and deserving man and it gives us pleasure to record this evidence of the love and esteem in which he is held by his church.
