LURAY, May 23 — Whispering Pines Assisted Living celebrated 23 years in the Page Valley on May 23 during a ribbon cutting and Open House celebration.

“We have a wonderful staff and wonderful residents,” said co-owner Brian Phelps. “”We are very proud to be in Luray and Page County. We couldn’t pick a more beautiful place and are happy to be here.”

Under the umbrella of Valley Care Management, Phelps and co-owner Scott Strickland came to Page County more than two decades ago and currently own both Whispering Pines and Hawksbill Assisted Living near the Luray-Hawksbill Greenway. The two were working at Richfield Retirement Community in Salem around the turn of the millennium when they got together to discuss “doing their own thing.” Through business connections, a family member heard about assisted living facilities for sale in Page County.

Last month, local officials joined the Whispering Pines staff at 200 Leaksville Road in Luray to cut a ribbon in honor of the assisted living facility’s 23rd anniversary. The event included live music, tasty BBQ and tours of model rooms in the facility, with plenty of staff on hand to answer questions. Introductions were given by company Vice President Tina Botdorf, followed by comments from the owners.

VCM currently owns five properties, including:

• Dogwood Crossing Senior Living & Memory Care – Tazewell, VA
• Hawksbill Assisted Living – Luray, VA
• Journeys Crossing Assisted Living – Elkton, VA
• TimberView Assisted Living – Timberville, VA
• Whispering Pines Assisted Living, Luray, VA

After initially buying three properties in Page County in 2001, VCM expanded with the purchase of Journey’s Crossing in Elkton and TimberView Assisted Living in Timberville in 2009. Dogwood Crossing Senior Living and Memory Care in Tazewell (southwest Virginia) was purchased out of foreclosure in 2015. MontVue (now Skyview Springs Nursing and Rehab Center) was sold around that time. Excel Therapy was also sold and became Apex Therapy six years ago.
