Flower show Oct. 3 at Rebecca J. Graves Center for the Performing Arts

LURAY — The Hill and Valley Garden Club presents “70 Years of Flower Power”, a National Garden Clubs Inc. standard flower show, from 1 to 4 p.m. this Saturday, Oct. 3 at the Rebecca J. Graves Center for the Performing Arts in the heart of downtown Luray.
“Like a grand wedding with a year full of choreographing for several hours of gaiety, the H&VGC is in its 12th month of preparations for their 70th Anniversary Flower Show,” club vice president Lesley Mack stated in August.
“Having a Flower Show in Virginia involves group levels from the National Garden Clubs (NGC), the Virginia Federation of Garden Clubs (VFGC), and our own Shenandoah District Garden Clubs,” Mack continued. “First, the H&VGC voted to have a FS which would coincide with their 70th anniversary, that was the easy part. The theme became ’70 Years of Flower Power’ with an emphasis on 70’s music titles or hippie themes – ‘Good Vibrations’, ‘Groovy Baby’, ‘Can You Dig It?’, ‘Wear Your Love Like Heaven’, ‘Shake Your Groove Thing’, et al., with many of the planning committee members able to sing the lyrics as they planned.”
The Performing Arts of Luray space offers a “large main floor for the 36 Floral Designs, 25 Classes of Horticulture, three educational exhibits; and upstairs rooms for guest speakers and a Floral Design Workshop,” according to Mack.
The Hill and Valley Garden Club is a member of National Garden Clubs Inc and the Virginia Federation of Garden Clubs (Shenandoah District). Saturday’s event is FREE and open to the public. The performing arts center is located at One East Main Street.
The NGC and VFGC are responsible for approving the Flower Show schedule that the H&VGC created following the NGC guidelines, according to Mack. The 32-page “70 Years of Flower Power” schedule contains the rules and descriptive lists for each of the show’s divisions — Horticulture, Design, Botanical Arts Artistic Crafts, and Education; as well as lists of committee members, a glossary, and a discography. Once approval was granted, six VFGC accredited judges were invited to judge all the divisions; guest speakers chose their topics; and invitations to other Shenandoah area garden clubs to participate in the Flower Show divisions went out.
“Emerging from my own deep sleep on several nights, [I] came uncommon [flower show] ideas like a Blacklight Room for fluorescent floral pendants, Floor Designs – ‘Let It All Hang Out’, use of 45 records in the Floral Construction Designs, and black draping for staging the Floral Designs. Many other groovy inspirations have also emerged from our club members,” Mack shared with fellow Club members. “Tye-dyed scarves for H&VGC members to wear on the day of; a revolving slide show presentation of the H&VGC’s 60 years worth of Scrapbooks; Flower Power 3-D signage; 70’s music to be played during the event; lavish judge’s gift baskets; and computerized sign-ups on our website.”
“It will be a most GROOVY day! Hope you have some bell bottoms and peace beads to wear. We’ll all be wearing ours.”
