Above average rainfall, temps during January

January saw high temperature reach 73 degrees

STANLEY — Temperatures for the month of January were above average. The average afternoon high temperature was 43.9 degrees, or 0.8 degree above the January average high of 43.1 degrees. High temperatures for January climbed into the 70s on one day, the 60s on two days, the 50s on five days, the 40s on 14 days, the 30s on five days and only in the 20s on four days during the month. The high for the month was 73 degrees on January 26.

The warmest January on record was in 1974, where the average afternoon high was 52.6 degrees. The coolest January was in 1977, where the average afternoon high was only 35.2 degrees.

The average daily low temperature for the month was 28.3 degrees, or 3.2 degrees above the January average low of 25.1 degrees. Low temperatures for January dipped down into the single digits on one day, the teens on six days, the 20s on eight days, the 30s on 12 days, the 40s on two days and into the 50s on two days during the month. The low for the month was 4 degrees on January 17.

Total snow for the month was 5.25 inches, or 1.25 inches below the January average of 6.5 inches. Snow recorded during the month included 0.2 inch on January 1; 3.8 inches on January 15-16; and 1.25 inches on January 19.

In the past 56 years, there have been three Januarys with no measurable snowfall (1972, 1974 and 2023). The snowiest January on record was in 1996, with 37 inches.

Total rain (and snow melt) for the month was 4.08 inches, or 1.37 inches above the January average of 2.71 inches. The wettest January on record was in 1978, with 7.59 inches of rain. The driest occurred in 1981, with only 0.23 inches of rain recorded.

The peak wind gust for the month was 44 mph on January 14.

Weather records broken during January 2024 include:

  • Jan 9 — single day rain of 1.18 inches; previous record of 0.6 inch in 1997.
  • Jan 15 — single day snow of 3.6 inches; previous record of one inch in 2014.
  • Jan 25 — maximum low temperature of 58 degrees; previous record of 46 degrees in 1984.
  • Jan 26 — maximum low temperature of 54 degrees; previous record of 39 degrees in 1981.

Other statistics for the month include:

  • 14 clear to partly cloudy days (17 avg.)
  • 17 cloudy to mostly cloudy days (14 avg.)
  • Two days with dew (two avg.)
  • Nine days with frost (eight avg.)
  • Four days with fog (two avg.)
